More adventures in Florida

Florida is an amazing place. The tree shown above is in my front yard. Can you tell what kind it is? It's an avocado tree and they are in season now (click to enlarge, escape to return).

There's nothing better than watching the NFL on Sunday except watching the games with guacamole, yum.

The guy across the street has a gizmo he uses to pick the avacados. They just fall off the tree, however, and I just wait, then pick them up. Generally I let them sit out for a few days to ripen, then put them in the fridge. Maybe you can tell from the photo above, they are like the ones in the store, but twice as big (that's a quarter for reference).

You don't peel the avocados, but rather cut them in half, remove the pit, score them, then scoop out the meat.

Guacamole can be made with lots of different stuff. Above shows what I added.

Take the above mixture and add all the goodies, take a fork and mash and mix. I like mine chunky, but you can blend it until smooth -- it's up to you. Then cover and put in the fridge. The flavors will blend making it yummy. When the games start, use as a dip with tortilla chips.

I watch carbs. Avacados are excellent in that regard. It's considered one of natures most healthful foods (see here). Read more about avacados here.

Do you like avacados? Do you have a favorite guacamole recipe?

  1. You lucky guy! We would love an avocado tree! Our neighbors in south Florida had a mango tree, and we could have all we wanted but I never developed a taste for mango. Avocado I love!

  2. I also watch carbs, and eat a fair amount of avocado, especially on Salads. I don't however, have my own tree!

Quick story - years ago, my secretary (blanca) was from Mexico. She was relatively young . . . attractive . . . one of my favorite co-workers of all time. So, someone's client gave them, like, a crate of avocados for some reason. So, of course, some partner thought it made perfect sense to have Blanca make guacamole . . . So, for the better part of several days, Blanca hung out in the kitchen making guacamole. Of course, she had no clue what she was doing, having never made it before . . . But, it seemed to make sense to people, given that she was Mexican and all . . . Unreal.

  6. I'm lucky enough to have a wife that makes me a lunch most days to take to work. It's usually a big cobb-style salad, and it almost always has a whole avocado cut up into it. Love it. Healthy, yes, but more importantly delicious. ;-)

  7. I love avocados and always thought they grew on a bush like other vegetables. Well, now I learn they are a fruit and grow on trees. Thank you for educating me.

  8. Hey, Dave! You didn't happen to be in Ocala yesterday, did you? I saw a guy at Publix that looked just like you and I almost went up to him and introduced myself but my wife says I do stuff like that too often and it's embarrassing so I let it go.

Anyway, if you ever do come to Ocala, send me a note.
