What's it all about?

Above: Wrigley Field was built in 1914 and is the second-oldest major-league stadium (Fenway Park is two years older).

Wrigley field is called "the friendly confines" and it does have a nice feel to it. I went to the game Monday with my sister, Kaye, and my brother-in-law, Terry.

MOJO: "The Cubs have lost 12 in a row."
Terry: "With the Cubbies, it's not about winning."

Terry is right. It's about the little things: He mentioned two or three times how glad he was that Kerry Wood struck out the last batter he faced before he retired. It's about the atmosphere. It's about tradition and ivy on the bleacher walls. It's about a fun day at the ballpark.

I remember the first time I went to Fenway Park and thought: "Babe Ruth played here." Well, he played at Wrigley, too. This from the Cubs' history FAQ on their web site: Babe Ruth's "called shot," when Ruth allegedly pointed to a bleacher location during Game 3 of the 1932 World Series ... Ruth then hit Charlie Root's next pitch for a homer.

Above: A remote television camera records the action as Alfonso Soriano waits for a pitch from Jeff Suppan.

Above: If you're a baseball fan, and you haven't been to a game at Wrigley Field (Fenway Park, too), put it on your bucket list.

  1. Nothing like going to a Cubbies game at Wrigley Field! I thought that Fenway had the same sort of feel to it.

  2. I don't have any Cubs pitchers, so you can go jinx them all you want...

  3. I went to Wrigley Field several years ago for the first time. It is part of our heritage that such an old stadium still exists. It reminded me of the old Busch Stadium where the Cardinals played until about 1964.

It is a throwback to an era when fans felt a lot more connected to the players, and many players played their entire careers in the same market.

  4. Went to a Cubs game about five or six years ago. Had the same "glorious shithole" feel about it that Fenway does. Thumbs up.
